Leave Something That Remains

How do you want to be remembered after your death?  I know it’s not something a lot of us consider on a daily basis, but the older I get it seems to weigh heavier on my heart and mind.  I must confess that as an only child and provider for my family I have spent a lot of my adult life trying to focus on building my personal financial portfolio.  In fact, a lot of my time has been dedicated to leaving some marvelous empire for my children and future grandchildren.  I have spent a lot of my life seeing what wasn’t there.  Some people work their whole lives building their resume that is worthless when they retire and only a few years building their legacy after retirement.

Again, how do we want to be remembered?  This was really driven home to me the other day while I was working in the yard.  I got into a few ant beds and as I was batting the ants away they continued to bite me.  Their last act on this Earth was to go out biting something – inflicting pain.  Is that how we want to be remembered?  The Lord has been so merciful to me and I don’t thank him enough for his unmerited favors and countless blessings He has bestowed on me. We are not here to accumulate more things, but we were created by Christ to perform good works.

Ephesians 2:8

8 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

 Psalm 139:14-16

14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.  15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.  16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.

We are not saved by good works but we are saved for good works.  In Christ we are the perfect workmanship of God.  We are the Master’s creation, created for His purpose to bring glory to Him.  In this moment in history we can serve the Master and bring glory to Him.  Each one of God’s children has a specific gift according to the grace that God has given us.  We all bring glory to God in our specific way.

I have found the greatest doubts we experience come from within ourselves.  We spend so much time looking at what we can’t do that we forget what we can do through the Lord Jesus Christ.  We are the masterpiece of God.  The secret to solving your problems is not to solve your problems.  The secret is to have something in your life bigger than your problems.  The Lord has given us everything we need to do what He has called us to do.

 2 Peter 1:3

3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
